Best Beaches
Kealakekua

Kealakekua is one of the best beaches and its on the west side of the Big Island, south of Kona. It is in the town called Captain Cook, next to the Place of Refuge. It is a beautiful lava beach that provides some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii.

There is a boat ramp, which makes a good place for beginner snorkelers. But, on the other parts of this beach, you can go right off the lava into the water. Those are better places for experienced swimmers. There you are in open ocean, but it is protected to some degree, because of the reef.

This is such a great place to snorkel! There are so many brightly colored fish that are all shapes and sizes. And the multi colored reef is so beautiful, with coral that is red, pink, yellow, blue, green, gold, and purple....There are also tons of turtles here....and some of them are huge!

If you take a kayak out a little further, into another protected cove, you will find that the snorkeling is even better. Certain times of year dolphins come and have their babies, so you will see them if you’re lucky.
